The Onam Festival Saree Styling Guide: Mastering the Look

by Sayed Sayeedur Rahman 30 Apr 2026

There's something instantly recognizable and deeply beautiful about the Onam saree look: pure white fabric with a single gold border, draped simply, worn with gold jewelry and a jasmine garland in the hair. If you're celebrating Onam this year, or attending an Onam event and want to dress appropriately, this complete guide to Onam saree traditions is exactly what you need.

What is Onam?

Onam is the biggest festival in Kerala, celebrated to welcome the mythical King Mahabali (Maveli) back to his people for one day each year. It falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September) and lasts 10 days, with the main celebration on Thiruvonam, the 10th day. Women dress in the iconic Kasavu saree or Set Mundu.

What is a Kasavu Saree?

A Kasavu saree is the traditional Kerala saree, characterized by its off-white or cream cotton or silk body with a gold border called kasavu (zari). The word 'kasavu' refers to the gold zari thread, derived from the Malayalam word for gold weaving.

Classic Kasavu sarees are woven in centers like Kuthampully, Chendamangalam, and Balaramapuram. These villages have been weaving Kasavu for generations, and their products carry the GI tag for Kerala Kasavu. Browse our onam sarees and south Indian sarees for Kerala-inspired designs.

What is Set Mundu?

The Set Mundu is the traditional two-piece garment worn by Kerala women as an alternative to the saree. It consists of a Mundu (white cotton cloth draped as a lower garment) and a Neriyathu (a long rectangular cloth draped over the blouse). Both pieces feature the white body with a gold kasavu border. Set Mundu is often considered more traditional than the saree in Kerala.

The Symbolism of White and Gold

  • White: Represents purity, simplicity, and the prosperity of Kerala's agricultural heritage. White is also the color of rice, Kerala's staple crop.

  • Gold (kasavu): Represents auspiciousness, prosperity, and the divine. The gold border frames the white like a golden crown, reflecting the relationship between common people and divine prosperity.

This combination has become a visual symbol of Kerala identity itself. During Onam season, the white-and-gold look appears everywhere: schoolchildren, office workers, government officials, and public figures.

Types of Kasavu Sarees (Onam Festival Saree Styling)

Types of Kasavu Sarees (Onam Festival Saree Styling)

1. Kuthampully Kasavu

From Kuthampully village in Thrissur district. Uses fine cotton yarn with a consistent weave quality and sharp gold border. Breathable and comfortable for Kerala's warm, humid Onam season.

2. Balaramapuram Kasavu

From Balaramapuram near Thiruvananthapuram. Uses exceptionally fine cotton with a near-silk drape while remaining breathable. Considered among the finest cotton Kasavu available.

3. Kasavu Silk Saree

A silk version of the Kasavu saree, popular for weddings and formal occasions. Has greater sheen and is considered more luxurious. Used especially at Kerala Hindu weddings.

4. Onam Kasavu with Colored Body

Contemporary variations with pastel, cream, pale yellow, or soft pink bodies with gold borders have become popular, especially among younger women and in the Indian-American diaspora.

How to Drape a Kasavu Saree for Onam Festival?

  • Wear a well-fitted white petticoat (pavada in Kerala).

  • Begin with the non-border end and tuck into the petticoat at the front-right.

  • Take the saree around the waist once, maintaining the lower border at ankle level.

  • Make 5 even pleats. In the Kerala drape, pleats are slightly narrower than the North Indian style.

  • Tuck the pleats into the petticoat at the center, slightly right of the navel.

  • Take the saree around the waist a second time.

  • Bring the pallu (the decorated border end) to the front from the right side. In Kerala style, the pallu is often brought across the chest diagonally and pinned at the left shoulder.

What to Wear with Your Onam Kasavu Saree?

1. Blouse

The traditional Kerala blouse for Onam is white or off-white. Contemporary choices include a gold blouse (beautiful contrast against white), an embroidered white blouse with kasavu thread, or a contrast silk blouse in deep jewel tones. Check our traditional blouse collection.

2. Jewelry

  • Kasumala (gold coin necklace): The most traditional Kerala necklace.

  • Palakka mala (leaf necklace): Long gold necklace with leaf-shaped pendants. Iconic Kerala jewelry.

  • Jimikki (jhumka earrings): Small gold jhumkas. Famously referenced in the Malayalam song 'Jimmiki Kammal.'

3. Hair

  • Classic bun (kunjalam): A bun at the nape or crown, decorated with a jasmine garland.

  • Jasmine (mullappoo) garland: Fresh white jasmine flowers in the hair are quintessentially Kerala.

Onam Saree for the Indian Diaspora

For Keralites living in the US, Onam is a major cultural celebration. The Kasavu saree is worn at the Onam Sadya (feast), cultural programs, and Thiruvathira dance performances, and large community Onam gatherings organized by Kerala associations across American cities. Wearing a Kasavu saree on Thiruvonam is a deeply meaningful cultural act that maintains a connection to Kerala.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can non-Keralites wear Kasavu sarees for Onam events?

Absolutely yes. Wearing a Kasavu saree to an Onam event is a beautiful mark of respect for Kerala culture. Non-Keralites are very welcome to participate in the white-and-gold tradition.

What is the price of a Kasavu saree?

Cotton Kasavu sarees range from Rs. 800 to Rs. 5,000 depending on fineness and border width. Silk Kasavu ranges from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 20,000-plus.

Is Set Mundu worn like a saree?

No. Set Mundu is draped differently. The mundu (lower piece) is wrapped as a sarong, and the neriyathu (upper piece) is draped over the blouse like a large stole. The two-piece draping method is distinctly different from the six-yard saree wrap.

Where can I buy Kerala Kasavu sarees near me in the US?

Indian grocery stores and clothing shops in cities with significant Malayali populations (New Jersey, Houston, Chicago, San Francisco Bay Area) often stock Kasavu sarees before the Onam season. Online, Kalyanja's onam sarees collection includes Kerala-inspired designs.
